What is a WAVE SAIL?

This is a tough question as these sails are made to do a lot of things... so, you'll have to read the explanations carefully and look for the the exact description that meets your requirements. Here are most of the things these sails do:

  • handle highwind conditions regardless of waves or flatwater
  • some are made for sideshore to side-offshore down-the-line wavesailing (like at Ho'okipa or San Carlso)
  • some are made for onshore waves which is more bump-and-jump windsurfing or river swell riding
  • the difference between these sails and the "crossover/freestyle wave" category is these do handle waves better... if you are not going wavesailing then be sure to look at the crossover category as well

2010 WAVE SAILS:

Aerotech Charge

Aerotech Charge

Concept: Side shore wave

The Charge remains Aerotech's down-the-line wave sail. This model has the ability to hold good power when needed but remains neutral for transitions or wave riding. For 2010 it is even more tuneable and the twist is positioned a bit further down at maximum downhaul. this gives the Charge a softer feel but keeps the power and improves stability and high wind control. Aerotech was the first to offer a 100% grid sail and the Charge continues that tradition for 2010. Lots of color gives this sail a real “look at me” appeal. It is one of the most durable wave sails ever produced using triple throw stitch seam construction.

Other features include: an anti-chafe bumper in the head, new raised stainless steel 6-1 pulley with oversized rollers, thermo-formed base pad and interactive rigging guide. All battens are rods.

The UDL04 Technora limited edition version features the ultra light, ultra strong UDLO4 material. This cloth is substantially lighter and allows the sail to be 10% to 15% lighter than standard models.

Designed for those who deserve the best.

 Aerotech Phantom

Aerotech Phantom

Concept: On-Shore Wave

The Phantom remains as Aerotech's most powerful wave sail. This sail has a very full shape and 6 battens so it lowers the planing threshold as low as possible. This sail is a wave sail first, but due to its stability and power it crosses over to freeride and bump-and-jump use quite well. The Phantom's ultra durable 100% grid construction and huge rante make this sail one of Aerotech's most popular models.

Construction: This model features a 100% grid construction for the ultimate in durability and UV resistance. Other features include; an anti-chafe bumper in the head, new raised stainless steel 6-1 pulley with oversized rollers, a thermo-formed base pad and interactive rigging guide. Durable rod battens are used in this model.

Hansen Wave HCL

Hansen Wave HCL

The new Wave HCL is the result of years of development in durable and tough state-of-the-art high-performance Wave/Bump sails. The Wave HCL incorporates our patent-applied-for Hansen Compliant Leech (HCL) technology which allows a sail to compliantly adjust both foil shape and twist automatically according to wind pressure and sheeting angle. The result is an extremely versatile sail with extended range that not only excels in light air acceleration, power and pointing but also overpowered gust response and handling. Sizes are adjusted to simplify quiver building with 15% spacing starting at 3.2 and extending to a light wind 6.3 wave sail while preserving the popular 4.6 and 5.6 sizes. The Wave HCL is designed to have a powerful yet soft, springy feel and is recommended for use with RDM masts.

Hansen V Wave

Hansen V-Wave

The Hansen Sails Team announces the 2010 release of the V-Wave Freestyle orientated sail, which has been developed in conjunction with Pro sailor and instructor Jason Voss.

Primarily a 'luff-curve' dependent design, tuned perimeter tension and moderate built-in shape in the lower sections. Attention has been paid to a close relationship between overall inflation in the sail body, and upper leech position, to give a solid and predictable response. Outline, boom length, angle and height are all developed with the Freestyle sailor in mind. The foot cut is relieved and sail body is both light and durable to handle the abuse a Freestyle sail must endure.

Sizes are: 6.3, 5.6, 5.1, 4.6, 4.1, 3.6.
RDM masts are recommended but not required.

Hot Sails Maui Smack

The Smack is a highly versatile heavy-duty power wave sail for all wave sailing conditions. The successful and popular Smack continues with only small changes for 2010. This power wave sail has proved its versatility in a wide variety of conditions from on-shore mush to side-off walls of monster surf. Unmatched for strength and durability this sail can take a beating and keep on going. The foot of the sail has had a structural change with the heavy duty Dacron panel divided into four sections to better orient the warp of the sailcloth. The result is less stretch, which makes the previous Kevlar reinforcement redundant and has been removed. This makes for a cleaner foot area with less possibility of snagging the nose of the board. This powerful wave sail has an enormous tuning range that can handle wild and gusty conditions.

The Bolt is a new sail line for 2010. It was developed following the popularity of the 2009 DD—sailors loved the lightweight feel of the four battened sail but needed more maneuverability and added strength for the waves. The Bolt is powerful, light and strong with amazing freedom of movement. The straight cut foot and short boom allows previously unimaginable possibilities for extreme waveriding and freestyle moves. The deep profile with ample luff curve delivers plenty of power to get you moving and the elliptical profile with advanced shaping keeps it all under control. MauiSails Legend

MauiSails Legend

Some would say that a legend is a story that is set in stone, a grand tale of the best in the past. But MauiSails™ is not satisfied with leaving things as they were, and always seeks to bring steady improvements and performance value to their finest pure wave sail ever.

Building off of the test and contest winning Legend range of 2009, we have taken the concept of the soft feel and slippery power to new levels. The Legend represents the cutting edge in wave sail design with a balanced forward-oriented power point for hard-driving bottom turns and flawless release twist profile for radical, gouging top turns. Stylish graphic appearance combined with structurally effective material use and location, continue to evolve in Artur Szpunar’s creative imagination. Small detail upgrades make the surface as smooth and efficient as possible.

By evaluating the tension using a custom load cell device our design team of Barry Spanier, Phil McGain, and Artur Szpunar have been able to manage the tension/shape balance through the entire range so the feel you get from size to size is consistent and dependable. The accurate tension measurements are a superb way of gauging the stiffness or softness in relation to sail area and mast type/length. Combined with regular one-on-one water testing, it is possible to have each size deliver a common ‘feel’ so transition from one to the other is easy and dependable.

Tough new tack area skid pads, refined load point attachments for the batten tensioners, continued use of the highest grade U.S. manufactured X-ply materials in 100% of the sail body, and new batten tapers especially designed around the softer shapes all contribute to the legendary evolution and should bring a smile to any dedicated wave sailor interested in being part of the MauiSails experience for 2010.

Maui Sails Ghost XT

Maui Sails Ghost XT

For 2010, MauiSails introduces a specialty, ultra-light, Technora wave sail called the GHOST XT. The name says it all. The GHOST XT provides surreal, barely there, lightweight handling, together with good power for low wind wave sessions.

Co-Sail Designer Art Szpunar had these comments about the new and exciting design:

"After using the Technora scrim in our XT series race sails for the past two seasons and noticing the material’s excellent combination of ultra-light weight and good durability, we couldn’t resist making some wave protos. I ended up using a 5.3 GHOST XT proto for countless big wave, light wind sessions this last winter and fell in love with the sail.

The GHOST XT will be the perfect sail for those  days with smooth surf, and for all sailors looking for that extra edge while wave sailing. It will be available in sizes 5.0, 5.3, 5.7, 6.1 and 6.7".

What is Technora? Technora is a very strong and light para-aramid fiber. Its tensile strength to weight ratio is 3x greater than that of fiberglass, polyester or nylon yarns which are other common fibres used in laminate sail cloth. Technora also has excellent fatigue resistance which means that it holds up very well to repeated loading, flexing, abrasion and UV. The Technora laminate cloth used in the GHOST XT provides the ultimate in light weight and stability with good durability.

North Ego

North Ego

The EGO marks a new era of Concept Wave sails, that we intend to develop consistently in the coming years, with a radical approach.

For us, the EGO represents a symbol of innovation, built with exceptional materials to incorporate the latest trends in sail design. Yet despite our passion for innovation, we are true to our motto „innovation follows function“. With this in mind, Kai Hopf developed the BALANCED.LUFF.LENGTH, a precisely balanced ratio of luff length to boom length. As short and compact as possible for radical handling and as long as necessary for a decent twist, and ensuring maximum wind range. In order to achieve sensible sizes, Kai uses the proven NORTH SAILS CROSS.BATTEN.CONCEPT in combination with the CUTAWAY.CLEW, that’s reaped real benefits in handling. When it comes to the number of battens, Kai is fairly conservative, since good high-end control and a wide wind-range still demand 5 battens.

IMPORTANT: the EGO is our first sail exclusively designed for RDM masts due to its special elastic characteristics. The smaller mast diameter perfectly matches this softer feeling sail and shorter luff.

NEW: All ICE sizes were designed for RDM masts, but are still compatible with SDM masts. That’s why the new ICE feels softer and can be easily controlled and pumped onto the plane. These abilities are also supported by the modified luff curve and the optimized leech tension.

The iMODULAR.DESIGN ’s optimized sail weight continues to have a positive impact on handling. Since the ICE was designed for all World Cup spots, it functions equally well from Ho’okipa to Sylt, to Gran Canaria or at your favorite spot.
