LEVEL 4 - Wave boards

Feb 5, 2010

One thing that is for sure about all the boards in this category is that they all love to be turned. When picking a waveboard you should evaluate the conditions that you will be using it in.

  • If you are using this board in flatwater or choppy conditions as much as in waves then you may want to pick "Crossover/Freestle Wave" board instead
  • Are you riding in open-water or river-swells where the wind is blowing in the same direction as the waves then look for a board that is classified as "Onshore wave" or "Power wave"
  • Don't judge a board by the number of fins it has! There are now one, two, three and four fin boards that work well in a wide array of conditions. Some are even convertible—tri fin boards that can be used in a single or three fin setup or quad fin boards that can be converted to a twin. Do your research and ask plenty of questions!

96 - Length:246cm, Width:65cm, Vol:96-l

The 3x Exocet's latest and ultimate R&D project for wave riding. The "Tri" fin option was our obvious conception, as it makes surfing and radical sailing possible in all conditions. The concept suits everything from onshore to sideshore, yet the sailors still have the option of a single fin configuration if desired.

The 3x truly ride the waves with an amazing drive from top to bottom and, thanks to the centre fin, the board never loses grip in the bottom turn. Plus it is very precise all the way to the cutback. When converting the Tri Fin setup to a single fin you will gain "horsepower" to get you on a plane, and with amazing top speed, ideal for crappy condtions, mushy waves and sky high jumps. This is a true CONVERTIBLE!

We’ve also added tail rocker and tuned the double concaves to maintain speed through any lines you choose to draw. The NewWave 91, our hardcore machine for heavier rippers and light wind addicts, rounds-up the line with an unchanged shape.

And of course, all of the 2010 NewWaves are available in high-end Team Edition versions too. This full Carbon Kevlar deck and Carbon bottom lay up both axes weight and dramatically increases stiffness and performance.

Key Features:

- Shorter, wider compact outline

- Fuller, softer rails forward of outline center featuring softer, tucked-under edge

- Tuned double concave bottom shape for speed and carving momentum

- Amplified tail rocker for tighter, faster turns

69 - Length:228cm, Width:53.5cm, Vol:69-l

75 - Length:229cm, Width:55.5cm, Vol:75-l

83 - Length:230cm, Width:57.5cm, Vol:83-l

93 - Length:232cm, Width:60.5cm, Vol:93-l

The all new Wave line replaces the very popular Real World Waves. When first introduced they were targeted as an alternative to the narrow radical down the line boards to cover less than ideal conditions. Over the years we’ve managed to create boards which cover almost all conditions, offering a direct rail to rail wave riding feel without compromising the need for low end and onshore performance.

SHAPE: The new wider, more rounded nose makes it much easier to position the board in the bottom turn and hold it through even the toughest chop, carrying all the speed and drive towards the lip where it delivers exceptional power in the top turn from even the softest of waves. This supports a faster cut back due to the extra surface area to push the board back off the lip.

A slightly reduced rocker has improved the acceleration and allows the rider to stay as close as possible to the critical section of the wave. You do not waste valuable meters heading downwind in an effort to maintain speed in onshore conditions, you can crank it around turning back into the section right away.

Reduced tail width delivers good wave riding ability despite the reduced rocker. The sailor can carve and smack the board around staying as close to the critical section as possible the whole time, ultimately generating more turns on every wave.

For a more comfortable ride in chop and extra control on bottom turns we introduced a double concave bottom shape pushing the wider Wave line to a new level of comfort and control.

A slightly wider stance helps the rider to vary his sailing style from either front or back foot wherever needed. Changing the turning radius and maintaining speed is easier than ever.

Phil Horrocks, World Cupper and Werner Gniglers test partner, calls them his favorite boards for onshore conditions.

PRO EDITION in Carbon Kevlar, Biax Carbon Technology with G10 fins. Super Limited Silver Finish. FULL WOOD SANDWICH Technology with Limited Finish.

SUMMARY: They are the complete package. They deliver a good performance in all possible conditions especially including less than ideal onshore conditions. This is also the reason why one of those boards is in every team rider’s quiver for difficult conditions.

*Within JP they are the best onshore boards.

KAULI SEADI’S QUADS: “My new Quads fit right in-between single fin and Twinser Wave boards as they combine the best elements of both. They give you a lot of control and speed in the bottom turns just like a single fin and at the same time allow you to really use the rails like on a Twinser. They are actually even a bit more radical, allowing super fast, tight carving turns and snappy cutbacks, with lots of control. The 4 fins give you more traction – the boards never slide. This allows you to always make it back into the face of the wave – even with the most radical top turns. So everybody will be able to stay in the critical section of the wave and ride the waves in a surfer like style. But the coolest thing is that you can ride the boards in Twinser or Quad setup as the basic board is the same as my Twinsers but with additional small outside fin boxes.” —Kauli Seadi

PRO EDITION In Carbon Kevlar Technology with G10 fins. Super Limited Silver Finish.

DEVELOPMENT: Kauli Seadi has been working on the Quad concept for quite a while and already used Quad boards in Cabo Verde in March 2009. As Kauli has been experimenting a lot with various outlines, shapes, fin positions and different fins - some of the boards looked rather weird and caught a lot of attention in the media but in the end he and Werner realized that the Quad concept works best with his existing Twinser shapes but with a very special fin set-up.

FIN SET-UP: The boards come with 4 short US Boxes. The larger fins in the US Boxes (same position as on the Twinsers – but shorter) help you to get going and the smaller ones which are further in front and close to the rails give you that incredible tight turning with almost endless control. As mentioned above the boards can be used as Quads or as Twinsers. If you want to use them as Twinsers you will need additional bigger US fins as they are not included with the board..

CONDITIONS: Probably the biggest advantage of this groundbreaking concept is the fact that they work anywhere and in any wave size - from small to big waves and from side-off to onshore conditions. To our own surprise the Quads perform exceptionally well in onshore conditions allowing you to choose between longer and shorter bottom turns and ensure you always hit the lip with lots of speed and under control. The four fins also help the upwind ability of the boards which is especially important in onshore conditions.

SUMMARY: If you like to ride waves in a surfer like style – close to the critical section – with radical vertical turns and powerful snap backs off the top (Kauli Style) there is simply no better choice.

74 - Length:231cm, Width:55.5cm, Vol:74-l

82 - Length:232cm, Width:57cm, Vol:82-l

92 - Length:233cm, Width:59cm, Vol:92-l

Kauli Seadi 3 times Wave World Champion and originator of the current twin fin trend inspired the whole wave riding scene with his first twinser boards.

His concept proofed its edge allowing every rider to carve more radical turns on every wave. Any rider was able to push his wave riding skills to a new level. His first line was so well received and the feedback overwhelming that we extended the range to 5 sizes. Working with Kauli and his professional approach helped Werner to come up with a board line which offers exceptional performance in average quality waves right up to epic mast high days.

SHAPE NEWS: Kauli and Werner developed a new radical bottom shape using deep double concaves with a very special V flow. The advantages are substantial, unknown grip in the turns combined with lots of lift from the flatter curve inside the concaves make the board ride very freely, fast and comfortable.

The more efficient bottom shape allowed us to reduce the size of fins supplied with each board. This clearly makes the board even looser and more lively to ride. This allows you to turn so tight that you lose no board speed and have plenty of time to make it back up the wave to tear the lip apart. The rider can stay pretty much right in the critical section of the wave, the place that delivers the most power and satisfaction for the serious wave rider. Width and length stayed quite similar to last year’s board line keeping the boards very compact and loose on the water. The reduced tail width allows to use the curved outline more efficiently, making it easier to change from rail to rail and super tight turns come naturally.

PRO EDITION In Carbon Kevlar Technology with G10 fins. Super Limited Silver Finish. FULL WOOD SANDWICH Technology with with T-stringers in the bottom, Limited Finish.

SUMMARY: The new Twinsers are so easy to turn, and now have the extra control in the turn to ride even more aggressive and committed. Nothing turns tighter than these boards. No matter how experienced you are your wave riding will reach a new level - guaranteed. You won’t believe your own bottom turns and cut backs. The Twinsers shine in side on to side offshore conditions - if you mainly sail in onshore stuff consider the new Wave line.

JP-Australia Polakow Twinser Wave

Polakow Twinser Wave 74 and 82

74 - Length:229cm, Width:54.5cm, Vol:74-l

82 - Length:233cm, Width:56.5cm, Vol:82-l

Jason Polakow’s signature line now with an all new twin fin set up. Since many years Jason is the benchmark in performance. His style is unique and the entire wave scene credits him for his extreme big wave riding skills and unmatched fast, powerful radical carving style. Jason saw the advantages the twinser set up was offering and has developed boards to mirror his style and perform best in the conditions he loves the most - big, down the line, wave sailing.

SHAPE NEWS: Werner took his knowledge from the Twinser line - which he designed with Kauli Seadi, the reigning World Champion. He refined the fast and radical turning and added more control for bigger waves. You can’t go too fast on the wave with this board, the rails just hold the speed and give you confidence when you need it most - turning in front of a massive wave!

Board width is the most obvious difference, engineered for maximum control in big surf by keeping the outline narrow with a sleek pin tail. The concave tail provides unrivalled stability even at full speed. The tail tracks smoothly without a trace of slide throughout the bottom turn. The bottom shape has double concaves in the front fading into a single concave in the tail area. This unique bottom design allows to change from rail to rail very quickly and gain instant grip on the rail.

The boards offer a very loose ride, with a bottom shape which generates a lot of lift and makes the boards plane and accelerate easily. They are far from being limited to big surf, have great potential in smaller waves and side on shore conditions, too.

Revolutionary fin design gives the board unbelievable speed and control in combination with unparalleled turning ability. The cut back alone will blow your mind.

PRO EDITION in Carbon Kevlar, Biax Carbon Technology with G10 fin. Super Limited Silver Finish.

SUMMARY: Twinser Wave boards designed for Polakow style sailing in medium to big waves. They deliver the unbelievable turning of Twinsers and at the same time provide the control and confidence you need in big waves. If you do not plan to sit on the beach when it gets mast high and bigger or if you simply prefer slightly narrower boards Jason’s Twinsers should be your choice - otherwise you might consider Kauli’s Twinser Waves or the new Wave line.

FINS: Twin fin concept, one full year of research and development by MFC together with Kauli Seadi and Keith Teboul, 2 of the most radical wave sailors in the world. This model comes from the outline of the EIGHT, and it has a LEFT and RIGHT fin. In fact it is very important to keep the same fin on the same side to keep the same amount and direction of torsion. The maximum draft of the profile is at 30%, allowing greater carving without penalizing the early planning and the upwind performances. Ideal for wave riding, bigger sizes can be used in on-shore conditions.

SPOON SHAPE: One of the numerous things that make a Quatro Wave Board as turny and snappy is the modern volume disribution. Spoon means shifting some of the weight and outline width forward to free up room for a tight and agile tail.

FINS: MFC, in conjunction with Kauli Seadi and Keith Teboul, developed the new Quad set up for wave boards. It was always in our minds to seek something that could be approachable for the everyday sailor, and it looks like we reached our target with the QUAD fins set-up. The board has drive. The different foil sections on the center and side fins drastically reduce the drag, which make upwind performances superior. This in turn makes riding waves easier for everyone. The board feels looser yet drives harder at the same time without compromising speed. It makes wave riding more forgiving. The board can be pushed with the front or back foot and the board and fins will continue to hold your style. We do not choose Quad fins looking at the size/length, but at the surface area we are using.

The link with surfing has always been a great inspiration for the wave sailors. The standard surfing fin set up is now available on wave sailboard that is specifically designed to replicate the accuracy and sharpness of surfing turns on the wave face. Try to believe.

The outline maximum width is moved towards the tail. More curved outline tail design in combination with a straight rocker and a simple V hull configuration creates a deck “fulcrum” area in the middle of the straps. The tri fin set up moves the bottom pressure point forward to fall closer to the deck one, so as to make every turn “pivoting” on these two pressure points that fall in perfect balance. A pleasure for both onshore and side-shore sailing. A new fast and early planning board that will feel secure as a single fin but “turny” and radical as a surfboard.

Technology: EXCLUSIVE Custom-made full sandwich with Biaxial Glass, which give us best results in terms of weight/strength. We kept Epoxy/Herex 100 stringers on bottom of the thinnest boards (mainly 68 and 76).

The Wave Twin Limited edition 2010 are the same shape of all the boards 2009, thanks to the fact that it was a great success throughout the whole world, and to the fact that having three wave boards lines this year in collection allowed us to have a complete range of boards with a single, twin and tri–fin set up. The most complete range of wave boards in the market today.

The mast box position has his middle point at 135, like all windsurf boards in the range 2010. Finboxes are about 5 cm further forward compared to last year. Together with Maui Fin Company we have opted for a new wave twin fins design that Maui Fin developed with Levi Siver: LS Wave Twins. Moreover, fins will be slightly bigger in terms of size for every WaveTwin Ltd model.

Technology: EXCLUSIVE Custom-made full sandwich with Biaxial Glass like we had last year in our Freestyle Wave Ltd lines, which give us best results in terms of weight/strength. We kept Epoxy/Herex 100 stringers on bottom of the thinnest boards (mainly 66 and 74).

A decade of wave, freeride and freestyle R&D has evolved to bring you the Kodes of today. The perfect blend of speed and aggressiveness, with maximum maneuvering versatility and pure carving pleasure: for wave riding, free styling; for the side shore waves of Cabo Verde to the choppy waters and beach breaks of Mui Ne, Vietnam.

What’s new for 2010?

Kode 74: extra vee was added under the back foot to the tip of the tail, to loosen up the board and allow it to carve a larger variety of turns. It wave rides more vertically without sacrificing speed or acceleration.

Kode 86, 94, 103: the tail outlines have been pinned out and narrowed down at the very tip. This allows these Kodes to carve a larger variety of turns, including tighter, snappier ones. Extra volume and deck dome was pumped into the rails in the tail and under the back heel, to provide a more domed shape and offer more float in the carves: more control, more grip and more forgiving turns. With the very thin rails along the rest of the board, the aggressive and fast carving nature of the Kodes remain.

Kode 112: like the three smaller sizes, extra deck dome and rail volume in the tail have been added, to give the back foot more grip and more control. With more rail volume in the tail, carving and turning becomes more forgiving, with more float to carry out of the turn, yet the aggressive and fast carving nature remains thanks to the thinner rails on the rest of the board.

New fins: for waves, G10 is out, polyester is in. The test team of four riders – Scott McKercher, Cyril Moussilmani, Svein Rasmussen, Boujmaa Guilloul - were unanimous: polyester versions of the Natural Wave fin series outperformed the G10 originals, by providing a more responsive flex that allows the fin to breathe and deliver more power with more grip.

Starboard Quad

Starboard Quad 66, 71, 76, 81 and 86

66 - Length:223cm, Width:53cm, Vol:66-l

71 - Length:229cm, Width:55.5cm, Vol:71-l

76 - Length:228cm, Width:57.5cm, Vol:76-l

81 - Length:233cm, Width:58cm, Vol:81-l

86 - Length:234cm, Width:60.5cm, Vol:86-l

The World’s first Quad fin wave boards - more drive, more traction, the ability to generate more speed on the wave face, turn closer and tighter, ride more vertical with the ability to go where you want, when you want. When going out through waves, the Quads also help you to stay upwind better than single or twin fin boards, thus positioning you to catch more waves.

Quads produce an enormous amount of drive. There’s a lot of fin area spread out over the tail, so when you push the fins, they work together to channel the water’s energy into the board. They create extra drive and speed and they can do this whether you’re making long drawn-out turns, or tight squirty turns. Go where you want, when you want and generate more speed on the wave face. Ride faster, ride more vertical.

Why is the front fin larger than the back fin? Starboard SUP and also surfboard shapers have been utilizing quads for some time now, with many high profile surfers such as Kelly Slater experimenting with these designs. Starboard R&D have tried nine different fin setups multiplied by different stiffness configurations and found that there was a lot of extra drive and a quicker board-turning initiation created by having a set of larger fins forward of a set of smaller back fins. The front fins have a size tuning range from 16 to 11cm.

For the convertibles: when to choose the single fin set up and when to choose the quad fin set up? Choose the single fin for more bump and jump scenarios and Quads to for pure wave orientated sailing.

Why Surfinz and Mini Tuttle fin boxes? Surfinz boxes are light and compatible with FCS but give more strength and the ability to further fine tune the fin placement by 8 mm. Mini Tuttle boxes are light and strong enough to hold bigger fins. Basically, the weight of two Surfinz boxes and two Mini Tuttle boxes are about the same as one US box: Quad boards would weigh the same as a single fin wave board. In convertible form, the Quad would weigh the same as a twin fin wave board.

With the success of last years Pocket Wave, we have chosen to keep this board the same. We put in so much time and energy to achieve perfection that it only makes sense to stand behind our efforts. This years Pocket Wave is a result of 4 years of development-  it is a solid performer. New in 2010 is the T-Lab X-Wave Fin line. We shortened for better manoeuvrability, but we kept the same planning and accerleration ability from last year fins!

A completely new range of boards has been generated for the Da Curve’s. New outlines, new rocker lines and rail shapes are just the beginning of this down the line destroyer. We have learned that a single or twin fin setup work on the same shape, so we will have both options available- single or twin! Our team has been instrumental in getting these boards to where they are now. Top of the line performance, top of the podium results- watch out.
