LEVEL 4 - Pick your riding style!

Feb 6, 2010

Advanced is a tricky word to classify windsurfing gear as it means different things to different people. For the purposes of this Gear Guide we will define it as anyone who is comfortable at planing and beyond!

Whether you are a freerider looking to get comfy in the footstraps of a top flight pro racer looking to dominate the PWA, your board is here... BUT...

... Always be sure to to match the board's size (volume and width) to your own personal ability and weight.

1. FREERIDE EASY

"Easy" is not a bad thing. For probably 90% of windsurfers in North America, these boards will do everything you need. Just remember, you may actually go faster on an easy-to-ride board than on a more difficult pro slalom board because you will be more in control!

KEY TRAITS: Easy to sail and emphasis is on fun rather than performance

2. FREERIDE FAST

If you are not in the footstraps then go back to category #1 (Freeride Easy). Most of these boards are almost as fast as their brand's pro slalom models. It is actually a fact that a good recreational sailor will go faster on these boards than they will of a pro slalom shape because they are easier to sail.

KEY TRAITS: Very fast rides and if you're not in the straps then don't look here

3. FREESTYLE

If you are into learning flatwater aerials then these are the boards for you. BUT also, tricks are not just for kids... and these board perform beyond just the crazy aerial tricks. If you want to learn freestyle but also ride waves equally as much then the "Crossover" category may be a better choice. The larger models in some of these ranges can work well as control-oriented freeride boards.

KEY TRAITS: Capable of aerial trickery and provide more of a controlled ride

4. CROSSOVER

Other names for this class are "Freestyle Wave" and "Bump and Jump." These are basically high wind freeride boards that are shaped to do everything as well as possible, including: highwind flatwater blasting, highwind freestyle and onshore and sideshore waveriding.

KEY TRAITS: Do-it-all highwind boards!

5. WAVE

This is a huge class that covers a lot of ground and conditions; however, all the board listed here are didicated wave performers rather than "crossover" shapes. If your goal is anywhere from slashing river swells to hitting huge down-the-line aerials then there is a board here for you.

KEY TRAITS: Love to turn as often as possible and preferably on some form of wave or swell.

6. PRO SLALOM

These are the actual board used on the PWA Slalom Tour... experience is needed!

KEY TRAITS: The fastest race boards. (Recreational slalom racers should look back to the "Freeride Fast" category.)

7. SPEED NEEDLE

Pro level speed boards designed for setting records. These boards require a special course and ability of sailor.

KEY TRAITS: The fastest in a straight line over flatwater (no turning necessary).

8. FORMULA

These are the earliest planing boards on the market place but require a huge sail and fin to work properly. There are many formula racers around the country, so if this is your thing... then these are your new boards!

KEY TRAITS: Super-wide and designed for upwind-downwind course racing.

9. LONGBOARD RACE

Back in the 80's this was windsurfing! Here there are a few new choices that will keep everyone happy from the Olympic hopeful to the "old-school" longboard racer.

KEY TRAITS: These boards race in any wind conditions.

10. KIDS PERFORMANCE

The youth equipment continues to progress. Now kids have a choice of anything from general freeride shapes to dedicated freestyle and wave boards to match their size. Lighter weight men and women may also want to check some of these board out.

KEY TRAITS: Awesome choices for kids to maximize their stoke and progression.
