LEVEL 4 - Crossover, Freestyle Wave or Bump & Jump

Feb 5, 2010

Patrick Bergeron

No matter what terminology you use—CROSSOVER, FREESTYLE WAVE or BUMP-&-JUMP—these boards perform in the widest array of water conditions when the wind us up! Here are some other important points to remember:

  • NO BOARD LINEUP CAN DO EVERYTHING PERFECTLY, so read each marketing report carefully and ask questions to your local shop as to whether the board is more "freeride", "freestyle" or "wave"
  • some board ranges change from more "freestyle/freeride" performance in the larger models and more "wave" performance as volume and width decreases
  • higher volume/wider models can double as "big-boy big-condition" models or "small-person flatwater" machines
  • outboard straps will add speed and directional-performance, while inboard settings add control, maneuverability and style

The new Techno Pro range makes an ideal quiver for riding with top quality equipment in all kinds of conditions. Made from Epoxy Sandwich, the Techno Pro slalom boards are Marco Copello signature boards, while Pierre Bracard’s name is on the wave and wave slalom boards. To create a full quiver, we chose a range of boards that each has a program particularly suited to the various wind and sea conditions that you can encounter. As the wind gets up and the waves start to swell, the Techno Pro 65 and 57 come into play with their wave slalom shapes that are both fast and highly manoeuvrable.

The Cross III offers better control, planes quicker and is able to ride the waves almost like a true wave board. For those who want to blast around, the outside footstrap position is the ultimate for flatwater explosions, while the inner straps offer better control, freestyle and wave riding abilities.

Coming in a single construction, the Cross III will allow you to progress in comfort.

82 - Length:240cm, Width:59cm, Vol:82-l

96 - Length:246cm, Width:65cm, Vol:96-l

The 3x Exocet's latest and ultimate R&D project for wave riding. The "Tri" fin option was our obvious conception, as it makes surfing and radical sailing possible in all conditions. The concept suits everything from onshore to sideshore, yet the sailors still have the option of a single fin configuration if desired.

The 3x truly ride the waves with an amazing drive from top to bottom and, thanks to the centre fin, the board never loses grip in the bottom turn. Plus it is very precise all the way to the cutback. When converting the Tri Fin setup to a single fin you will gain "horsepower" to get you on a plane, and with amazing top speed, ideal for crappy condtions, mushy waves and sky high jumps. This is a true CONVERTIBLE!

JP-Australia Freestyle Wave

JP Freestyle Wave 78, 85, 93, 102 and 112

CATEGORY: Freeestyle Wave (aka Crossover)

78 - Length:232cm, Width:56cm, Vol:78-l

85 - Length:233cm, Width:58cm, Vol:85-l

93 - Length:234cm, Width:60.5cm, Vol:93-l

102 - Length:236cm, Width:62cm, Vol:102-l

112 - Length:237cm, Width:64.5cm, Vol:112-l

This board is so much fun to sail. It’s a board for all conditions, it planes super early, great for flying out through the surf easily and letting rip a big air! High speed, great turning and jibing are also part of the package. That is the reason why it earned its position over the years as the benchmark board in its group.

With particular attention to retaining the proven balanced performance, which works perfectly in any conditions, we focused the new design improvements on easy sailing and a more comfortable ride, also adding greater radical wave riding ability.

SHAPE: This year we have introduced a double concave V bottom from the mid section of the board to the nose. This design concept swallows chop and lets the board glide over it. The sailor can concentrate on his stance and not worry about the waves pushing the board around. An additional advantage of this shape is the extra grip in the turns.

The proven channel bottom between the foot straps provides extra lift and grip in straight line sailing. The combination of the straight rocker line in the channel and the additional curve to the left and right of the channel supplies the unmatched combination of great maneuverability and high speed. The mixture of concaves and channels deliver a perfect combination of performance and comfort.

In the waves you get stacks of speed and drive in even the crappiest waves, making things like powerful front side smacks and aerials possible even in side onshore conditions.

The footstrap options allow the rider to change the handling characteristics from wave mode to a great blasting board for costal and flat water conditions.

PRO EDITION In Carbon Kevlar Technology with G10 fins. Super Limited Silver Finish. FULL WOOD SANDWICH Full wooden deck with Kevlar reinforcements, Limited Finish.

SUMMARY: The perfect All in One boards. They cover it all - bump and jump, freestyle and wave sailing. Easy enough for everybody but at the same time exciting for the experts. Loose enough to be classed as a wave board and balanced enough for big sail carrying capacity, probably the most versatile boards ever produced.

RRD Freestyle Wave 75, 85, 91, 96, 101, 111 and 120

111 - Length:244cm, Width:65cm, Vol:111-l

120 - Length:248cm, Width:68cm, Vol:120-l

In the biggest line of windsurf boards ever to date, a new revolutionary technology has allowed to offer these “custom shapes” to a wide group of windsurfers thanks to an easier to use and abuse, more durable type of construction.

We introduced a new hull design with a full V, without any deep concaves and just minor concaves in the middle just to make sure the V is a really flat V when the board comes out of the mould. We introduced a new rocker line, a little bit higher in the front and straighter in the middle point between the front foot and the back foot strap. This allows the boards to feel more like wave boards and perform like a real freestyle boards. The feeling as soon as you touch the board is like having a really small and compact wave board but at the same time the planing capacity increased compared to last year. Outlines are completely new with narrower tails and noses. We redesigned a proper volume distribution with the latest tendency of shape design, and we reduced fin sizes quite significantly: 1 cm on all the sizes, except the small size. A shorter and more compact feel for 2010 to guarantee more top end performance.

Two Construction Choices:

X-Tech: EPS/Glass/SX 42 hi density sandwich foam covered by wood sandwich skin on top and bottom with a Glass laminated in Single Shot moulding process.

LTD: Custom made full Herex 100 sandwich top and bottom with Biaxial Glass for the deck and Glass for the bottom custom made lamination. Herex 100 Ω (omega) bottom stringers for 91 and smaller sizes.

94 - Length:237cm, Width:62.5cm, Vol:94-l

102 - Length:237cm, Width:65cm, Vol:102-l

112 - Length:237cm, Width:68cm, Vol:112-l

122 - Length:236cm, Width:72cm, Vol:122-l

A decade of wave, freeride and freestyle R&D has evolved to bring you the Kodes of today. The perfect blend of speed and aggressiveness, with maximum maneuvering versatility and pure carving pleasure: for wave riding, free styling; for the side shore waves of Cabo Verde to the choppy waters and beach breaks of Mui Ne, Vietnam.

What’s new for 2010?

Kode 74: extra vee was added under the back foot to the tip of the tail, to loosen up the board and allow it to carve a larger variety of turns. It wave rides more vertically without sacrificing speed or acceleration.

Kode 86, 94, 103: the tail outlines have been pinned out and narrowed down at the very tip. This allows these Kodes to carve a larger variety of turns, including tighter, snappier ones. Extra volume and deck dome was pumped into the rails in the tail and under the back heel, to provide a more domed shape and offer more float in the carves: more control, more grip and more forgiving turns. With the very thin rails along the rest of the board, the aggressive and fast carving nature of the Kodes remain.

Kode 112: like the three smaller sizes, extra deck dome and rail volume in the tail have been added, to give the back foot more grip and more control. With more rail volume in the tail, carving and turning becomes more forgiving, with more float to carry out of the turn, yet the aggressive and fast carving nature remains thanks to the thinner rails on the rest of the board.

New fins: for waves, G10 is out, polyester is in. The test team of four riders – Scott McKercher, Cyril Moussilmani, Svein Rasmussen, Boujmaa Guilloul - were unanimous: polyester versions of the Natural Wave fin series outperformed the G10 originals, by providing a more responsive flex that allows the fin to breathe and deliver more power with more grip.

Starbaord Atom

Starboard Atom 99

Length:238cm, Width:68.5cm, Vol:99-l

Starboard introduces the Atom 99, the hyper-maneuverable freeride board. The freerider designed with a single purpose: to bring the freedom of style to freeriding. It's 30% thinner for maximum maneuverability and reactivity.

Ride it strapless for total freedom of expression, to carve heel side and toe side jibes and ride switch stance. Or ride it straps-on for conventional control.

Ultra slim, with a fast rocker line and integrating Starboard's power steering spiraling vee concept, the Atom 99 turns, carves and reacts like no other freerider. It's no longer about top speed and maxed-out power. Only freedom counts.

Forget points, forget test scores; forget conventions and freeriding as you know it.

Technology: Extra thick monopad with a super soft under-layer: the pad forms to your feet under pressure to provide maximum grip with tolerance to bounce. This allows the Atom to be ridden strapless even in choppy high wind conditions.

Spiralling vee bottom shape: creates the power steering effect when carving the board through turns.
