LEVEL 1 - Beginner Boards & Sails

Feb 5, 2010

Learning in light windSo you are a BEGINNER windsurfer. Let me be the first to welcome you to this amazing sport. Don’t get intimidated by all the gear listed on this website… we are going to keep this nice and simple.

Please read through the following questions in order and let them guide you through various options on how to get the most out of your windsurfing… and by most we mean MOST FUN!

1. Windsport recommends starting with a proper windsurfing lesson. This will save you a lot of time and effort learning the sport and it may let you skip up to a more advanced equipment group sooner than you’d ever think. 2. Do you really need to buy a huge beginner board or a "triangle-shaped" trainer sail?

Not necessarily, but you may want to and  here is why...

BIG BEGINNER BOARD: If you live in a lightwind location or own a cottage where you can store a massive board then we recommend that you will receive excellent value from owning one. No matter what your ability level it is always easier to learn a new skill or trick on a bigger board in lighter wind and then transitioning it to a smaller board in higher wind later. Learning a fast tack, pivot jibe or any non-planing freestyle is immeasurably easier on a big floaty board. So even advanced level sailors can have fun and learn new things on a huge beginner board.

TRIANGLE TRAINER SAIL: A trainer sail is mainly useful for learning in light wind, so if you plan to teach your family and friends down the road then it may be a good buy.

Or, maybe you are just here researching what beginner gear is on the market today? You’ve come to the right place. Let’s get started.
