Freeride sails are for anyone who just loves to sail back and forth across the water having the most fun possible! These sails do everything the recreational windsurfer needs them to:

  • they are fast enough
  • rigging them is a breeze compared to specialized sails
  • they are perfect for learning how to get into the footstraps and jibe... and if you are already there then they will keep you happy every session out!

Here are the FREERIDE SAIL options to choose from:

1. LOOK BELOW for all the Cambered Freeride sails - a sail with camber inducers typically has more power than one without. Many of these are just a slight step down from the pro race sails

Concept: Freeride

The Rapid Fire has been updated for 2009. This was the first slalom sail to offer 100% grid construction and that tradition continues. This twin cam slalom series features one cam below the boom and one above. For 2009 the Rapid Fire is all about power. Its new double vertical luff panel as well as slightly wider sleeve improves power and gives this sail a 'race sail' feel.

Construction: This model features 100% grid construction for the ultimate in durability and UV resistance. Other features include; micro roller cams, a new raised stainless steel 6-1 pulley with oversized rollers, and insignia tape reinforcing. A mixture of rod and tubular battens are used in this sail.

The UDL04 Technora limited edition version features the ultra light, ultra strong UDLO4 material. This cloth is substantially lighter and allows the sail to be 10% to 15% lighter than standard models.

In order to support the growth and development of the Techno 293 OD and Hybrid classes, BIC Windsurf developed the One Design Rig package for use specifically by youth sailors on hybrid boards. This rig package has been designed to be raced in the widest wind range possible, representing the best possible compromise between light wind pumping performance and high wind planing performance. The key features of these rigs include:

    * A huge wind range: from 6 to 30 knots. By tuning the downhaul and outhaul, the sail can be rigged either very full with a tight leech, or very flat with an open leech.

    * A draft placement at approx. 40% from the front of the sail (freeride sails = 30% / sub-planing sails = 50%), offering the best compromise between lightwind performance and high wind control.

    * 6 batten / 2 cam configuration for the best compromise between weight and performance.

    * A very stable profile for ease of use and control in the high winds.

    * A tack strap tensioner for maximum tuning range and power in light winds.

    * X-Ply reinforcements in critical areas, durable luff pocket material and webbing batten tensioners for ease of use and practicality in a club and racing environment. Though you may not win every race in all wind conditions, the goal of the One Design sails is to make sure that you have the tools to win the regatta!

The FreeRace HCL is a user-friendly, tight-sleeved version of the Slalom HCL incorporating the technology developed for our top-level racing sails. Outline and 3D shaping are similar to the Slalom series with a seven batten, 0/1/2/3 cam-option configuration. The FreeRace HCL also utilizes our patent-applied-for Hansen Compliant Leech (HCL) technology which allows a sail to compliantly adjust both foil shape and twist automatically according to wind pressure and sheeting angle. Titan is the perfect design for fast free riding and Formula Experience racing. Continual development and testing has further enhanced the desirable soft feel and easy maneuvering that is already well known. Formula Experience racers are sure to find the refined, slightly flatter profile perfect for top speed and easy acceleration. Adjustments to leech seams make the twist character even and smooth, with only moderate downhaul required to achieve the correct setting.

A bold graphic look exhibits the increased use of X-Ply materials in a striking recognizable pattern. Load focused attachments in the batten tensioner system perfectly smooth the trailing edge correctly tack to tack. Four tube/rod battens add to the general shape stability and light weight. The conical sleeve design never holds water and makes recovery and waterstart after falls easy. Rotation is so smooth, you have no idea there are cams, making jibing as much fun as an RAF.

Tough new anti-chafe material protects the sleeve and tack area from damage. A deeper boom cutout makes attaching the boom a breeze, especially when using the MauiSails™ custom boom head design. The integrated lightweight loop-on clew pulley adds a low friction solution to outhaul adjustment that is full race capable and easy to use.

The Naish Boxer SL applies the Boxer paradigm to slalom sailing. One can immediately feel that this sail incorporates not only all our experience from the NORTH SAILS racing range, but also the power and the latest features of the RAM F10. It‘s fascinating too that that the S_TY PE has gained functionality and is no even more suitable for a larger range of board types.

This is partly due to the familiar SWITCHABLE.CAM.OPTION allowing the sail to be ridden with either 3 or 2 cambers, and in particular to the CUTAWAY.CLEW outhaul that significantly improves handling thanks to a shorter boom and reduced rotation forces.

Another reason is the medium-size CONICAL.AERO.SLEEVE.DESIGN mast pocket. This represents the ideal compromise between optimum propulsion and comfortable waterstart behavior. Regardless whether at high speed or simply cruising and jibing, the S_TYPE has many faces - the perfect universal performer.

The OverDrive is optimised for reaching performance where speed is not compromised for a user friendly feel for everyday blasting.

The OverDrive promotes innovative rig ergonomics which have resulted in a sail that is faster for many sailors than a traditional race sail due to the ease of use. A narrower luff sleevewith the neoprene closure discourages water from entering the luff kepping the sail light for easier waterstarting and uphauling and the snap on roller cams make rigging simple.

Developing this sail to perform on lower carbon content masts and avoiding fragile components such as carbon tube battens has increased the durability whilst decreasing the cost of ownership.

Formula Experience: The new 9.7 and 11.0 are designed to be competitive in Formula Experience and both are compatible with the 250-270 Alu race boom and the Blue Line 530 for tuned race performance at a practical cost. This will utlimately encourage more people to participate in this successful class of racing.
